Caladrius is first mentioned in Roman texts as a bird living in the palaces of kings and emperors — it is completely white, symbolizing her purity and divine nature. It main ability is to diagnose and cure diseases. If Caladrius looked at a sick person, it meant that the person would recover, as the bird took the disease on itself. Then it flew to the sun and “burned” the disease, cleansing both the patient and itself.
In medieval bestiaries, this bird became a symbol of Christ: it takes on the diseases (or sins) of people and carries them away. Painters depicted Caladrius next to the sick, and in some sources it was associated with biblical ideas of mercy and healing.
